The tiny Devon village of Stoke Cannon, together with its neighbouring Brampford Speke, held its own races in the middle of the 19th century. The pair of villages is located on each side of the River Exe some 4 miles north of Exeter. The main landowner lived in the splendid Brampford House which is in the centre of Brampford Speke, but a meeting took place in Stoke Cannon on Tuesday 31st July 1860. The meeting was quaintly called the Stoke Cannon Derby meeting and the Clerk of the Course and main organiser was Mr P Greenslade. Although a meeting took place in Brampford Speke 2 years later, no further records exist of a meeting in Stoke.
